Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon in Kolkata’s Shirishbagan area, under the jurisdiction of Leather Complex police station, where a man lost his life in a house fire. The deceased has been identified as Surjeet Haldar, who was residing in a rented accommodation in the area.
The fire, which broke out in Surjeet's house, was first noticed by his neighbors when they saw thick smoke billowing out of the property. Despite the neighbors' attempts to intervene, the flames quickly engulfed the house.
Two fire brigade vehicles were dispatched to the scene immediately upon receiving the distress call. However, by the time firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze and gain entry, the household items were reduced to ashes, and Surjeet’s charred body was discovered inside.
The door to the house was locked from the inside, which delayed the rescue efforts as firefighters had to break down the door to enter.
Local sources stated that Surjeet lived alone in the rented house. Police are now investigating the cause of the fire, with suicide being one of the angles under consideration. Officers are also speaking to neighbors and other local residents for further information.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, and authorities are working to determine whether it was accidental or deliberate. Further details are awaited pending forensic analysis and the completion of the police investigation.
